Matthew 14:1-14 · In Christ I Stand
As we continued our journey this week through Matthew's Gospel, we arrived this week at one of its more unexpected passages - the story of the death of John the Baptist. It's not the easiest of readings, but it carries a quietly powerful message about Jesus, grief, and where we take our pain.
When Jesus hears the devastating news about John - His cousin, friend, and the one who prepared the way for His ministry - He withdraws to a lonely place to be alone with the Father. Jesus does not ignore His grief, rush past it, or pretend everything is fine. Instead, He carries His sorrow honestly into the presence of God. In this, Jesus shows us that following Him does not mean escaping pain; it means learning where to take it.
Many of us know what it is like to carry wounds, disappointment, loss, strained relationships, anxiety, betrayal, or grief. Sometimes we try to push these things aside through distraction, busyness, entertainment, or self-protection. Yet avoiding pain does not bring healing. Jesus invites us to bring our whole selves honestly before Him so that unresolved wounds do not continue shaping our lives in destructive ways.
A powerful part of the service was hearing Maria share her personal story and journey through deep pain toward healing and freedom. Her vulnerability reminded us that healing often begins when we stop hiding our struggles and courageously bring them into the light and into the presence of God.
The passage also gives us a striking contrast between Herod and Jesus. Herod responds to his inner brokenness through ego, impulse, and self-protection, ultimately wounding others. Jesus responds through prayer, honesty, and dependence on the Father. And from that place of grief and prayer, He returns with compassion for the crowd.
As we continue through the week, may we remember that Christ meets us not with condemnation, but with compassion. In every season - whether sorrow or joy - we are invited to stand firmly in His love.
